Community Council Meeting Minutes
October 1, 2024

West Haven Elementary Conference Room

In Attendance:

Courtney called meeting to order at 4:08 pm. Laura seconds the motion.

Introduction of members

Nomination of new chair, vice chair, and secretary:

  • Kim nominated Brayden Tucker as chair, Courtney seconded the motion. All members present voted in favor.
  • Laura nominated Kristen Ross as Vice Chair, Kim seconded the motion.  All members present voted in favor.
  • Kristen nominated Laura Miller, Brayden seconded the motion.  All members present voted in favor.

“Good Vibes”/ Positive feedback from the community: 

  • Back to school night was a success.  Parents who have students that came form Kanesville Elementary due to boundary changes said that it was a positive and welcoming experience.

Rules and Procedures:

  • Reviewed the rules and procedures of Community Council
    • These are available to the public on the West Haven Elementary website

Land Trust Goals:

    • Reading
      • By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, sixty-two percent of West Haven Elementary students will demonstrate typical, above typical, or well above typical growth as measured by the Pathways of Progress Acadience Assessment.
      • Discussion of changing the goal from 62 to 66
        • All members present voted to keep the goal at 62
        • Due to the unknown with the high quantity of change in students due to boundary changes Brayden made a motion to vote on changing the goal, Courntey seconded the motion
      • This goal is supported through reading tutors
      • Looked at the beginning of the year data
      • Reviewed goal set by last year’s council
    • Math
      • By the end of the 2024-2025 school year, 60% of K-3 students will show typical, above typical, or well above typical growth on the Acadience Math Assessment as measured by Pathways of Progress. 70% of 4th-6th Grade students will meet their scale score growth goal in RISE.
      • This goalie supported through math tutors, and chromebook software
      • No math data to review yet
      • Reviewed goal set by last year’s council
    • SEL
      • Most students don’t understand what GRIT is 
      • This year we are focusing on GRIT 

    • TSSA
      • Funds go towards mental health advocate, zen den, and character strong

    • 20th year celebration carnival
      • Reviewed what the PTA and principal have planned
      • Students will have to go out the front doors so that set up can take place, parents will be notified

    • Literacy Night-
      • Ideas include: resources and activity suggestions, having interpreters there for the ESL students, a list of websites the school has access to already where parents can work with their students
      • Council is being asked what we would want from a literacy night

Next meeting we will meet with the tech team to discuss digital citizenship and any changes that have been made to district policy and procedure.
