Pick Up/Drop Off

West Haven Elementary

School Safety Guidelines

The safety of our students is very important to us! To allow for the maximum amount of students to be dropped  off and picked up in a safe, efficient manner, please follow the drop-off and pick-up procedures.  There are two circular driveways in front of the main entrance. The yellow driveway is for BUSES and DAYCARE  VANS ONLY. The RED driveway to the northeast of the main doors is for dropping off or picking up students.  Parents may also drop off and pick up on the south and west side of the school as well as the park parking lot lo cated northeast of the school by the tennis courts. There are openings in the fence on all sides of the school  which allow students to access the playground and outer classroom doors. (Students may always enter through  the main doors and go to the playground through the school.)

Refer to the map for proper traffic flow, which enables the drop-off lane and parking lot to run smoothly and  exit in an orderly manner.

DROP-OFF/PICK-UP LANE PROCEDURES:

  • PULL FORWARD as far as possible! This allows the maximum number of cars to enter the parking lot and  prevents backup onto 3900 W, especially in poor weather.
  • Be quick and efficient in dropping off or picking up your students – have folders signed, backpacks ready,  coats on, breakfast eaten, etc. Please do not linger after your student has exited/entered the vehicle to  text, etc.
  • Have students use the passenger side of the vehicle to load and unload to avoid through traffic in the left  lane.
  • After dropping off or picking up your student, move to the left through lane to exit. You may turn left  from the loading zone to exit through the parking lot.
  • DO be patient and courteous to volunteers, faculty, and staff when using the drop-off/pick-up lane.  • Need extra help? Ask the office for a HAWK sticker to put in your passenger window to have an aide open  your door or assist young children.

PARKING LOT GUIDELINES:

Use the crosswalk and wait for the crossing guard (when present) to accompany your child into the  school.

  • To reduce the need to stop traffic in the drop-off/pick-up lane, DO NOT use the parking lot to drop off or  pick up students. Students must be accompanied by a parent to use the crosswalk.
  • Handicapped PARKING is NOT a drop-off or pick-up area. Disabled parents who are NOT getting out of the  vehicle to accompany their student into or out of the school should use the drop-off lane.

These procedures and guidelines will be enforced from 8:15-8:45 AM and 3:00-3:30 PM on a regular school day.

WALKING/RIDING to SCHOOL:

  • Walk your student along his/her route a few times and make sure they follow this route each day. • Use sidewalks, the designated walking lane and crosswalks when available. Students should not cut  through private property.
  • Have students follow the direction of the crossing guards east of 3500 W, in front of the school and on  4100 W.

Alternate Drop Off/Pick Up Zone 4400 South

South Side Loading Zone and Procedures 1

● We recommend that you use the East drop off lane on 3900 W. It is ok for students to walk around the building inside the fenced area!

● Please be courteous and pull forward to the stop sign at the end to allow maximum use of the area.
● Pull forward if there are cars waiting behind you

● DO NOT block driveways or move cones! If the cones are not out that does not mean it is ok to park there, even for a short period of time. Please avoid blocking any of the areas indicated by the blue arrows.

● The south side of 4400 South is a red zone, which means no parking, ever.

● DO NOT let students cross the parking lane to the traffic lane (otherwise known as double parking) to exit or enter your vehicles.

● Wait for an opening near the curb. This morning there was plenty of curb space available on the East and West ends of that street. It is ok for students to walk a little way from your vehicles to the fence openings. You are welcome to wait a minute and watch them make it to the openings if you have to pull over a little farther away!

● Parking for long periods of time and getting out of your car makes it difficult for other parents to be able to safely drop off their children! Be respectful of others.

● Please remember that after school our staff is out there to help your students! They will remind you to follow the procedures as a courtesy to everyone. Please be kind to them as they work to keep things smooth and safe.
